Air Conditioning Compressor for 83-86 Vanagon (SD-508)

Air Conditioning Compressor for 83-86 Vanagon (SD-508) New A/C compressor with clutch for 83-86 Vanagon. In 86 and 87, they were transitioning from the SD-508, to the SD-510, to the SD-709.  So if you have one of those two years, this compressor will work, however, some adaptation may be required.  Please check your compressor head (rear end) to be sure which version you have.  SD-508 (Vanagons from 83.5-86) has compression nut fittings on the ends and looks like this:

The SD-510 (86-87 only) and SD-709 (86-91) have a similar design in the end fitting, but the head itself is a different thickness which throws off how the fittings attach.  Here is a picture of the two of them side by side for reference:

You can see what I mean about the thickness of the “head” of the compressor.  The other difference between the two is that the SD-709 is a 7 cylinder compressor while the SD-508 and 510 are 5 cylinder.  The higher the cylinders the more efficient the compressor.  That being said as long as you have a good functioning system, either should work well.  You should try to order what you have for simplicity sake.  If you have any questions please feel free to email us.
