This is the shift lever with the plastic ball on it for 83.5-91 Vanagon (Gas and Diesel). When replacing you should also replace the boot that covers it and the cup that goes beneath it. Usually the boot fails and then dirt gets inside and the ball is grinding away at the cup like a mortar and pestle. Replace all three and you should be good to go!
